Obituary

September 4, 2001

Emily L. Schweitzer, 89, a breeder of Irish setters who bred more than 23 championship dogs, died after a long illness Saturday, Sept. 1, in Rosewood Care Center, Elgin. When Ms. Schweitzer was 12, her father bought Glencho Ruddy Oogh, the first in a long list of the copper-colored dogs she owned and showed. "It was her first Irish setter, and it was love at first sight," said Lorraine Bisso, vice president of the Irish Setter Club of America. After graduating from high school at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Chicago, Ms. Schweitzer devoted her career to raising, breeding, showing and promoting the Irish setter breed. In 1972 her dog Verbu Duffin Miss Duffy won a rare dual championship for field and show. "Only 18 setters in the last 100 years have accomplished that," Bisso said. Ms. Schweitzer was the oldest member of the Irish Setter Club of America, serving as a board member and on various committees. In 1989 she received the Eldredge Award from the Irish Setter Club of America for sportsmanship and devotion to the breed. Survivors include a sister, Evelyn Strepek; and three nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday in Miller Funeral Home, 504 W. Main St., West Dundee, followed by an 11 a.m. funeral service.
